This is episode two of the Maryland 400 podcast, exploring Maryland and the American Revolution, from journalism professor Tom Moore of CUNY York College. This week’s episode focuses on Maryland’s Black soldiers, who are often overlooked but were a critical part of the Continental Army.

Maryland enlisted Black soldiers as early as the summer of 1776. They served alongside their white comrades in integrated units. In fact, the Revolutionary War was the last time the United States Army was officially integrated until 1948. A moment to Black patriots will be dedicated at the Maryland State House in Annapolis later in 2026.
