In August 1776, a group of soldiers—the Maryland 400—helped hold back the British Army at the Battle of Brooklyn, allowing the rest of the Americans to escape the field. The Marylanders lost a quarter of their men that day, but their stand saved the Continental Army, allowing it to live and fight another day.
For more than 10 years, the Maryland State Archives has researched these soldiers. We have written and posted biographies online of all the known members of the unit, more than 870 men. Now that work is ready to be published as a book, the first time that every Maryland soldier’s story has been told. But we need your help!
The forthcoming book, Finding the Maryland 400, is set to be published in time to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in 2026. This book will have biographies of all 872 known Maryland soldiers who fought the British that day, as well as much more information about the Maryland Line.
This important book cannot be published without your help! Publication is completely dependent on outside funding. We are asking that anyone who supports telling the story of Maryland’s Revolutionary heroes please consider a donation for the project through the Friends of the Maryland State Archives.

Thank you to all the friends of the Maryland 400 who have already donated to support this effort. Your support is crucial!

I haven’t read the book yet, but I can see a movie or even better, a mini series based on this. Just call it “The 400”. Let the movie/series end at the Byrne Playground in Brooklyn where it is believed the remains were buried.
